Chateau Amsterdam: a winery right in the middle of Noord

Father and son bring grapes from Europe to the city and make the wine here, from must to bottle.

You can't move a vineyard. You can move a winery. That's the simple, brilliant idea behind Chateau Amsterdam, founded in 2017 by a father and son as an urban winery.

The grapes come from European wine regions, but the craftsmanship happens in Amsterdam-Noord: pressing, fermenting, ageing and bottling, all within the ring road instead of hundreds of kilometres away.

That produces classic wines, but also more modern styles and experiments you're less likely to find at a traditional winery. Craft in every bottle, as they put it themselves.

For Amsterdammers it's also a day out: you can see where your wine comes from and talk to the makers instead of just reading a label.

In a more luxurious box or corporate gift, a bottle of city wine is the kind of detail that sticks - especially with recipients who thought they'd already had it all.
