Oedipus Brewing: four friends who gave Amsterdam-Noord some colour
10 August 2026 · 4 min read
From contract brewer in 2012 to their own brewery on Schaafstraat, with beers like Mannenliefde and Gaia.
Oedipus was founded in 2012 by four friends - Alex Mager, Paul Brouwer, Sander Nederveen and Rick Nelson - who started out brewing under contract at other breweries.
In 2014 came their own brewery on Schaafstraat in Amsterdam-Noord, complete with tasting room. Since then, the address has been just as much a neighbourhood spot as a production site.
The beers are unconventional, and the labels even more so. Mannenliefde, Gaia, Thai Thai: colourful, playful and never a copy of what already existed. The fact that the brand grew into one of Amsterdam's best-known craft breweries (Heineken took a minority stake in 2019) hasn't changed that tone.
For a Christmas box, that's a gift in itself: a can so cheerful-looking it doesn't even need wrapping.
Add a local sausage and a piece of chocolate and your drinks box is completely Noord.
