Potverdorie!: jam made from fruit nobody wanted
9 August 2026 · 4 min read
Charlotte and Joep turn misshapen harvests into jam that technically isn't allowed to be called jam - with 70% fruit.
It started at a neighbourhood shop in Amsterdam-Oost, where Charlotte Heine saw how less good-looking fruit and vegetables were set aside. There's nothing wrong with the taste - only with the looks.
Together with Joep Weerts, she's been making jams, chutneys and spreads from exactly that fruit ever since: picked ripe, too small, crooked or just a bit too irregular for the shelf.
Their jars are so packed with fruit (around 70%) that, by the rules, it technically can't be called jam. So there's little sugar, and always a herb or spice thrown in - plum with red pepper, peach with aniseed. That's what makes it so good, they say themselves.
Personal contact with growers is part of the model: they know whose harvest it is and what's going on that season.
In a breakfast or Christmas box, this is the little jar that saves Sunday morning and shows that giving sustainably doesn't have to be boring.
